Thanksgiving

So, this is Thanksgiving weekend (for Canadians) and I'm just posting to let you know that I will not be updating this weekend because of the tradition of meeting with one's own family, stuffing your faces, and falling asleep. I will be unable to to my writing, as I do not yet have the money for a laptop. I will update soon after, and I'll put in a nice, juicy excerpt of my sex scene for you all. Have a great holiday, everyone.

Word Count: 976 Total Word Count: 5032

Yes, a little over halfway to 10 000!!! I don't remember ever getting so far so fast. Problem is now I'm addicted to over-caffeinated drinks. Ha. I'm tired after a long day and I need a can of carbonated sugar. I have plenty of wear on my enamel, thank you. So I decided to grace my story's pages with an absolutely beautiful poem by Mary E. Frye. Many of you might recognize her poem entitled: Do Not Stand at My Grave and Weep. In case you haven't, I feel it prudent to enlighten you.

Do not stand at my grave and weep,
I am not there, I do not sleep.
I am a thousand winds that blow,
I am the diamond glints on snow.
I am the sunlight on ripened grain,
I am the gentle autumn rain.
When you awaken in the Morning's hush,
I am the sweet, uplifting rush.
Of quiet birds in circled flight,
I am the soft stars that shine at night.
Do not stand at my grave and cry,
I am not there, I did not die.

I adore Mary E. Frye for writing this, it's truly beautiful, and I think it fits my story well. I mean it in the sense of Viola. Something that has Caused Dyana so much stress and heartache, but is not really there. In the end however, because she can not exist, she can't die either, now can she? It's sad, a great deal of what Dyana goes through, but it's absolutely necessary for her survival and development. I'd often wondered why authors put their characters through such hell, make their lives so haunted and dark. I've finally found that their greatest joy can be measured by their greatest sorrow, and if you want your characters to be happy, you need them to be sad first.

Here for you always,

Scarlet Carson.

Oopsie

Word count: 1018 Total word count: 4056

Okay, okay, so I skipped a day. Shit happens, I was busy and tired. I'm farther ahead than Jade anyway. So, today was the first day I actually had to think about how to stretch my sentences so that they'd have more words in them so I could meet my quota. I adore writing. I hate writing boring parts. The first chapter, when it's a "proper" length, I find to be quite boring. Trust me, had I my way, I'd make chapters four pages long. Sadly, I promised myself I wouldn't rush ahead. So, at ten pages in, I'm still writing the first fucking chapter (oops, profanity).

What I'd give to know where the hell it's going. If I'm getting bored at my own story, god knows how readers would feel about it. That's why I find it convenient to place only excerpts from it in this blog. That way you see my talents, and neither of us gets bored. Speaking of excerpts, here's my choice for today:

He was so utterly...feminine. His dimpled cheeks, his tanned skin, his large, brightly-colored eyes, he was just too much. Dana looked utterly enchanted.

Short, I know, but I'm not particularly happy with a whole lot of what I did today, plus there's a lot of dialogue in it. This part I chose is when a prince from a different land comes to their palace and they're eying him up. In the Succubus/Incubus culture (that I made up), masculinity resides in paleness (for your skin tone, I'm not racist!) dark eyes, long, dark hair, and dark clothing. Colours are considered feminine. Essentially, I'm just against Abercrombie-and-Fitch-looking men. Ugh. Vanilla bland.

So, I'm done for the day. I've got all my ranting out and you've got your tiny excerpt (I promise a better one tomorrow, I plan on writing a sex scene. Ohh, it'll make you melt).

Write you tomorrow,

Scarlet Carson.

The Imperfect Perfectionist

Today's word count: 1019!!
Words to date: 1019

YES! It's about time, isn't it? May seem like an insignificant number, but to me I feel... accomplished. I've past the initial 1000 word "slow period." Symptoms include: lack of ideas (or rather, lack of good ideas) and a pessimistic attitude where I alternate between deciding to give up, or brutally picking apart my writing so much that I give up. And that's the vicious cycle. The point IS that things might go a little smoother from now on because I am no longer wracking my brain for ideas while staring at a blank page. It's quite daunting in my opinion. Thats why I just try to write stuff down, no matter how crappy, just so I don't have to look at that empty page. Anyone else have that problem?

I am writing this now at 3am so as much as I want to ramble on about my sudden inspiration for this story and what I am planning, I'm gonna have to cut this short, with a promise that I will write a shitload of stuff tomorrow. :)
I actually wish I could stay up all night to continue writing the story because now that the creative juices are flowing I just want to get it all out. -Just so you know, that sentence wasn't meant to be as dirty as it sounded.

But alas, I have to get up early tomorrow and should eventually get to bed. It's funny because I am in NO way a morning person, but so far I've been consistant in posting after 12am. I just don't learn.

Tonight I just wouldn't let myself sleep until I hit the thousand word mark. It's all for you. Blogging is quite the motivational driver. Even though people may or may not be reading this, it feels like I am writing for something, or someone important. Yes, of course that includes you Scarlet, the world's best Motivator.

Right now my story is unedited and I will not post an excerpt until I have worked my editing magic, because right now I am sleep deprived I would bet that there are a shitload of grammatical errors. I'm even disappointed in my post tonight because I'm afraid everything I'm saying is coming out the wrong way...

I figure I should wrap this up considering my head keeps swaying towards the keyboard when I pause to think of what to type. Something that is not an innuendo.

So feel free to send me congratulatory comments for getting my ass into gear. :) I'm kidding... kind of.
Details on my plan for my story will be up tomorrow. And possibly an excerpt just because I'm a giving person.

Good Night!

Moving on

Word count: 1022 Total word count: 3038

Wow. Never expected to stick to anything so long. Have to say, I'm not surprised with Jade, though. She's a busy girl, and, as you'll come to know, a brilliant one. Her ideas are so well formulated and thought out, her plots so creative, there's no chance she'll be anything other than great. She knows she's better at it then me, even if she'll never admit it. If she could stick to things longer, she'll be better than...no not better then, best. Just best.

Getting back to my story, I have to admit I have no idea where I'm going plot wise. Shit just keeps appearing on the Word document under the frantic flying of my fingers and I just keep running with it. So my little succubus has gotten into some deep emotional/psychological shit. Her inner evil, aka Viola, is being her regular evil bitchy self, and causing some serious trauma. Dyana is trying to figure herself out, and all the while, the royalty from Baroth are coming, Oh, no! Ok, so none of you know what the hell I'm talking about, but that's fine. You see, I have some resident paranoia issues with my stories. I don't like divulging plot points to anyone, in fear of being ripped off. Don't be offended, sweet reader, I don't let my own family read my shit. It's sad really, but with time, I believe I'll be able to part with some of my writing. Maybe if I had motivation to... (ahem, *review*) I might be more inclined to.

I don't think any of you care enough, though. So no harm, no foul.

Anyway (oh, GOD, why do we have such ridiculous slang nowadays? AnyHOODLES? RiDONKCULOUS?), onto my favorite bit of writing for the day. Here we go. Instead of one sentence, I'll give you a few (see, I'm already becoming more comfortable with you!).

A young succubus lay in a pool of light, her black wings torn, her dark blood oozing to the floor. Her tears, a corresponding black, roll down her pale grey cheeks, staining them. Her fingers are bloodied and torn. She has no fingernails, instead sharp talons top her fingers. A whip-like scaled tale flicks out from beneath her. Small, ivory horns curl from her scalp. Her eyes, however, are the thing that scares me. They are a brilliant shade of the purest gold.

What do you think? In the story, the succubi are grey-skinned, red-haired, black-eyed creatures with black wings. That's why the gold eyes startled her. So I've got to be going (again). I told you Jade is better at blogging than I. She just sounds more natural.

'Till Tomorrow.

Scarlet Carson.

The throne of distraction

Outline word count: 1573+
Hours put into researching topics for story: At least 10
Word count for actual story: 0

Hi everyone. It's Jade, now two days behind and writing to you from my distracted, over-analyzing, LATE deep hole of shame. I know I am late with my entry and I have no story yet to show for it. [Readers should now pester Scarlet about disclosing her fantastic ideas for her story.] She's over 2000 words into it and I am dying to read what she's got so far.

So I owe Scarlet and anybody else reading an apology for not keeping up with our first challenge, only two days in. I cannot tell you about what I've written so far because well, I haven't started writing the story yet. Don't get me wrong, I have been writing, researching, and have been on a two-day pursuit for relevant background information for my story. I guess I should explain why the hell is it taking me so long to start it.

Credit for the wild choice of subject for our first challenge is all due to Scarlet. While I knew what an Incubus was, I didn't know the extent of what they were or their characteristics beyond 'entering women's dreams and having sex with them,' in addition to their ability to exhaust and kill their victims during the act. I should mention that I had an original idea for the story, which basically featured a man that developed into an incubus and his problems and relationships from that point onward. I figured it would be pretty damn hard to stay in a stable relationship when you crave sex from different partners all the time. Unless your girlfriend/boyfriend is into infedelity.

Anyways, I thought I should look up some stuff for this story since I needed some sort of back-plot. I searched multiple sources which delved into the origin of incubae, and it's subtle connection to religion. Then I found out that incubi were a type of demon, which was when I just had to look up the other ones.

Yes, I realize I've reached a whole new level of nerd right now. Sue me. I told Scarlet today that I trashed my previous idea and was thinking of using existing myths, and theories to use as the 'world' of my story. I babbled on about all of my "findings" and she listened and was supportive. I'm grateful, considering I was talking incessently, and was practically foaming at the mouth. Stop me next time Scarlet. For your poor ears' sake.

So with all the crap I've collected, I am almost done deciding how exactly I'm going to proceed with my story. Unfortunately, I have no character names to disclose yet. But I am pretty sure that my story will be from multiple points of view and will take place in mostly modern times, but will flashback to different times in ancient history. I have decided that the main characters lives' will all be interlinked in some way. It will be from the POV of a human, vampire, incubus, AND succubus so far. My story will be a thriller; with lots of angst and smut. Will not be a typical, fluffy romance I assure you. I'm going for darker themes, and as Scarlet could tell you, it's my favourite genre to write in.

The prologue will contain some religious aspects that some people may or may not be familiar with. My story is not going to be entirely based on religion or pre-existing myths. I am using the religious figure to explain the origin of some of my characters.

Hmm. I'm not giving you much, am I? I know, the only thing worse than waiting for someone to finish writing is waiting for someone who takes her fucking time to write. Scarlet is the impeccably prompt one of the two of us. She will make her due dates, be the first one to arrive anywhere, and as you will see, produce the most brilliant pieces of writing. I...well, I have my faults: procrastination, unavoidable use of profanity, to name a few.

But I promise you, my story will come. Even if I have to strap myself to my keyboard for the next week.

God fuckin' speed,

-JB

True to Day Two

Word count: 1011 words Total word count: 2016 words

Helluva second day, I'll tell you. Busy as hell in the morning, busy in the afternoon. Didn't even get home 'till six. Bloody hell, how time flies, neh? Got a good chunk of plot done. Made Dyana start choosing her "donors". Have to admit, loving the possible male lead so far. His name's Raytry. I know, not the best name, but it's the first one that came to me. I'll tell you, ALWAYS stick with the first name, because everything else you try will sound wrong and everytime you think of that character, you'll always refer to them mentally by the name you first picked for them. There's just no way of getting around it.

Anyway, I'm sure by now you've noticed my partner in crime missed a day. She took her time writing out a thorough outline, the smartie. I never seem to take the time to write a decent one, so I'm always rushing through my writing trying to get all my ideas out instead of taking my time and going over them all like I should. It's one of the great things about a "words-per-day" challenge. I feel compelled to stay in a constant rhythm of writing, so everything flows nicely and doesn't feel sprinted through. It keeps things even. It's comforting to go home and know you're going to be doing some writing.

Unfortunately, I am exceedingly busy during the week, so I must cut this entry short (well, at least I wrote one, JADE).

Be seein' ya,

Scarlet.

p.s: Improper diction only works if you use the proper puntcuation. Note the " ' " where a "g" should have been. This marks it as intentional.

Scarlet Fever

Word count: 1005 Total Word count: 1005

Hey, there.

Successful first day, you could say. It was no problem writing that much, but blogging is different. Jade's better at it because her style has more of a conversational tone, so her entries will always sound better... they'll probably be longer, too. Anyway, I chose to write my story from the POV (point of view) of a succubus rather than an incubus. I don't like the traditional takes on paranormal creatures, especially vampires. I like them much better after a little, shall we say, tweaking? I also like to invent new terms or names to make things more interesting. I'm not saying I like to refer to already created words as gibberish ones I make up, but I like titling things. A good example of it (not that I've done, but I do roughly the same thing) would be in J.R. Ward's Black Dagger Brotherhood books.

Jade's laughing because I'm completely obsessed with the series and it's been less than a day and I'm already mentioning it. It is true though. They titled the bad guys "lessers" and described them as heartless (literally), ghost-white, baby powder-scented evil beings that can't get it up. She created a new race and called them something very unique. It's a valuable skill that you need a real hard-core imagination for, so congratulations J.R. Ward. Anyway, back to my story. Notice the usage of the word "story" and not "novel". Good lord, if you're ever writing anything you think could become something bigger, don't call it a NOVEL. You're jinxing yourself. It's happened often enough to me, thank you very much. Damned by my own ambition, one could say.

Story, right. I get off topic, side-tracked by my thought processes. So my main character, Dyana, has a voice in her head, sort of like schizophrenia, only she doesn't really have it. It's like her evil twin named Viola, and I'm having a hard time making her lines not sound corny and like they came out of Count Chocula's mouth. "Mua ha ha ha!! I vant to eat your cereal!" It all just comes off fake and ridiculous. *sigh*. I don't want her to sound like some comic book character villain, I just want her to sound like a huge bitch. I don't know enough bitches to get her right. I'm going to need to do some serious editing in the long run. The story is nothing without it's flow. Remember that, readers.

Time for my Most Epic Line of the Day (MELD). Okey-dokey, here's my choice. It's not exactly my best work, or even anything complicated, I just like it's rhythm:

" She wiped her eyes and looked to me as if all evidence of her haunted expression, of her sobs, would be erased by that simple motion."

I like it. It's talking about her mother looking at her. How heartbreaking, eh? Doesn't sound too cheesy? No, I don't think it does.

Sincerely,

Scarlet Carson.

The first challenge...needs an outline

So this post is just adding onto the previous so that is why I am not including the Word Count--but if you must know, I haven't accomplished much of anything yet.

For the purpose of this blog, Scarlet and I will be informing you of the new challenges we are discussing or have decided to start. We will post the guidelines we have set for ourselves, which will be different each time. Feel free to try doing the challenges if you're interested.
You can also send us any specific challenge ideas you want us to try and then publish. What do you think about using suggestions from readers for future challenges, Scarlet? Could be interesting :)

Since I want to start writing some time tonight, and eventually, some much needed sleep since I had to get up at the ungodly hour of 9am this morning. Only for a book fair would I sacrifice my weekend chances to sleep in. But anyways, on to the First Challenge.

Story Challenge #1
10/03/09
Must focus around a character who is a Incubus or Succubus [Death by Sex]

Invent own world, and additional characters with or without magical capability

Will eventually be a novella or a full length story

Due date: Not yet determined

At least 900 WPD (excluding today, of course)

Genre: Paranormal Romance

This one is pretty vague isn't it? Not enough conditions. Oh well. As we start writing, you'll get more insight into the story. I can tell you that this story will be heavily in the paranormal genre (fantastical creatures, immortals, really gorgeous men with extraordinary powers...that sort of thing). If your interested--then try it for yourself. Or just nag Scarlet and I to get the chapters finished faster. We'd appreciate the support. Trust me.

Everyone Knows Writer's Read!

Hello.

Jade and I (Scarlet), are writing stories/novels/ect. We are here to spread our book obsessions and complaints to the internet. We both read and write excessively, it's just what we do. Our styles are exceedingly different, though. Jade and I are attempting to refine our writing skills, and you, our wonderful readers, are there to help us through our "rough spots", and aid us in our journey. You will get to read as we write ourselves to insanity and spend many late nights typing until our fingers feel like they are going to fall off, our eyelids are drooping, and we blog in Pepsi fueled rantings.

Despite what some people think, writing is no easy feat and we have discovered (from the multiple unfinished stories in our Word folders) that coming up with ideas and producing a not-so crappy story is harder than you may think. So began the story challenges, which came from Scarlet and I compiling our unusual tastes to "create works of art" says Scarlet, as I roll my eyes. Actually we put our ideas for stories that we are considering writing, and lack the ability to complete without a motivator in The Story Challenges. This started a couple months ago, with The Dungeon Challenge, a.k.a our chance to finally create the smutty, threesome vamp story we've always secretly dreamed of writing.

For the most part, that is indeed what we are doing. However, we easily get off track and tend to rant on end about whatever is plaguing us daily. I know this all sounds like some great jumbled mess because as I type I have Jade talking over my shoulder, and we are constantly switching seats and trying to spit out whatever the hell we're trying to say. And now I've gone and lost my train of thought. Thank you, Jade. Fear not, though, dear reader, Jade and I will not be sharing every post, we just thought it imperative to write the first together. After each blog entry, we will sign our names, telling you who's been writing.

Jade here. The story challenge ideas are scraped from the twisted, hilarious, angst-y, romantic, or paranormal edges of our imaginations, and thrown on paper. Or at least, that's how I put it. We determine the length, the genre, and occasionally the setting or characters before we begin writing. Then, we assign ourselves a due date. Our stories are written individually, the point of the challenges are just to keep us on track and motivated. We decided that now, we should make our challenges public.

It just so happens that today, we have decided on a new challenge. Scarlet and I agreed to each try to write 900 to 1000 words a day so our [hopefully] daily posts will begin with a word count for the day and then an overall word count. We will keep you updated on our progress with each challenge, post excerpts, and we promised each other to mention if we relapse.

WARNING:
Our challenges, mostly paranormal in genre, will contain explicit sexual content in addition to profanity. Some of the sexual content will be slash (gay), and I urge you: if you are offended or uncomfortable with situations of that nature, to simply skip the entry. We will try to warn you in advance if such content appears in our posting. Flamers? Honestly. You were warned, read at your own risk.

This has been our First Post:

Sincerly, or as much as we can be,

The 'REAL' Bibliophiles,

Scarlet Carson and Jade Black.
